CORDILLERA MASS
MOVEMENT ARCHIVES

“Preserve the past, ignite the present, define the future.”

Scope and Content Notes

The Cordillera Mass Movement Archives collection was originally from the the Cordillera Resource Center for Indigenous People’s Rights (CPR-IPR). The CPR-IPR, an independent NGO, was established in 1982 and operated until 1998. One of the mandates of the CRC-IPR was to collect oral and documentary materials on Cordillera issues and concerns, one of which is indigenous people’s rights. A library was maintained to make available to the general public the wide collection of important sources and information on the Cordillera people’s resistance and mass movements that were ignited by the Marcos’ regime’s destructive development projects like the Chico River Dam Projects in Kalinga and the Mountain Province and the Cellophil Development Corporation in Abra. The collection is a wealth of resources on the Bodong and Peace Pact conferences, mass actions and people’s activities in the Region. When the CRC-IPR closed down in 1998, the collection was turned over to the Cordillera People’s Alliance, a non-stock, non-profit independent federation of progressive people’s organizations committed to the promotion and defense of indigenous people’s rights, human rights, social justice, and national freedom and democracy. The CPA then named the collection Cordillera Mass Movement Archives. The collection was officially turned over to the UP Baguio Cordillera/Northern Luzon Historical Archives on December 2, 2013 on the occasion of UP Baguio’s Foundation Day celebration. As Luchie Maranan, a UP Baguio alumna wrote, “The CPA’s records of a decades-old people’s movement are not only a valuable contribution to historical research, but more importantly, a testament to a people’s collective memory.”
